NDIS Funding Explained
The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) provides funding to eligible Australians with disabilities to access the support they need to live independently and achieve their goals.
Who is Elligible for NDIS Funding?
The eligibility criteria differ according to each state, however, generally speaking, you will be required to meet certain requirements. These include being eligible for Medicare benefits, having a diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder (ASD), intellectual disability (ID), cerebral palsy (CP), traumatic brain injury or concussions, acquired brain injuries, or neurological conditions. Your condition may not necessarily be diagnosed at this stage, but rather they might want to check if you have had any previous diagnoses. In addition to this, you may also have to provide evidence of functional limitations, including sensory impairments, communication difficulties, behavioural issues, social challenges, learning impairment, or physical disabilities.
Types of NDIS Funding Categories
NDIS funding is divided into three main categories, each designed to support different needs:
Helps with daily activities, transport, and social participation.

✔ Employment and education support
✔ Improved daily living skills
Funds assistive technology and major home/vehicle modifications.

How is NDIS Funding Managed?
NDIS participants can choose how their funding is managed. There are three main options, each with different levels of control and flexibility. You can also mix and match these options for different parts of your NDIS Plan.
NDIA- Managed
NDIS manages your funds and pays registered providers directly.
✔ No need to handle payments
✔ Can only use NDIS-registered providers
❌ Less flexibility in choosing service providers
Plan-Managed
A registered Plan Manager helps manage your funds and payments.
✔ Access both NDIS-registered & non-registered providers
✔ No need to manage invoices and payments yourself
❌ Some admin involvement in working with the Plan Manager
Self-Managed
You have full control over your budget and service providers.
✔ Choose any provider (registered or non-registered)
✔ More flexibility in how you spend your funding
❌ Requires good budgeting and record-keeping skills
